This group of drawings was interestingly my final project for a class on observational drawing. The final didn't actually involve much observation, so I took this unexpected opportunity to make progress on a personal project of mine. I created a short story via scanned drawings made with pencil and charcoal. The drawings act as a draft forĀ a future project called Core.
Either way, the story is neither here nor there right now. By using charcoal I was able to achieve deeper darks than I normally would using pencil. I was also able to blend the charcoal much more easily than a pencil's granite. It was due to the charcoal's softness that the rolling dark clouds of the second image were possible. For the fifth image charcoal was patted against the paper to produce black specks on the rock walls at the foreground. A sharp pencil was utilized for the outlines and line art. These techniques allowed me to be as descriptive as possible for when I'm recreating the story later on; whether something should look more realistic, fictional, or mystical was considered for this reason.
